I stumbled onto EMT conduit at Home Depot and built a couple of rudimentary projects using existing connectors. Conduit seemed an ideal DIY material, if only there were better means of assembling things, I thought. Then I stumbled some more and found Maker Pipe. Here were people who shared my enthusiasm for conduit and did something about it! I settled on the DIY Countertop Pipe Desk Kit for my first project and ordered the kit with some additions. I wanted a long, narrow counter for an Epson P600 high-end photo printer (I'm an amateuer photogrpaher), plus an HP all-in-one, plus my 27-inch MAC in the middle. I used 3/4" sheet plywood to produce an 8' by 26" top but then had to extend the table base. My longest unsupported span would be under 4' so it seemed do-able. I used the middle support offered in the plan, plus I added two lateral diagonal supports on the long dimension to prevent any side-to-side wiggle (may have been overkill). There was something of a learing curve in using the connectors but nothing compared to any other method I know. The instructions and videos offered by Maker Pipe are great. Their customer service approach is phenomenal. It was a very positive experience that produced a very useful item.
